Interoception: the hidden sense that shapes wellbeing
Sit in a safe and comfortable place, close to your eyes and
try to feel your heart beating against your chest. Can you, without moving your
hands to take your pulse, feel each movement and count its rhythm? Or are you
waging a war to locate something in some way? This simple test is simply one
way to assess your "interoception" - your brain's notion of the
nation of your body, transmitted through receptors in all of your internal
organs.
Interoception may be much less well known than the "outward
looking" senses with sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell, but it has
important effects on your well-being. Scientists have shown that our
sensitivity to interoceptive signals can determine our ability to alter our
emotions and our subsequent susceptibility to mental health problems, as well
as stress and hopelessness.

interoception is a key mechanism of physical and mental fitness, in which
